Stronger Hair Starts at Home

If your hair seems thinner, shorter, or less full than it used to be, you may automatically assume you're experiencing hair loss. But there's another possibility that is often overlooked: hair breakage. Breakage happens when the hair shaft becomes weakened and snaps before you have a chance to retain your length. Frequent coloring, blonding, heat styling, brushing, chemical services, and everyday wear can all contribute to fragile hair. The good news? While professional hair-care products can't treat medical hair loss or shedding from the scalp, the right routine can help repair damaged hair, protect fragile strands, reduce breakage, and help you keep the length you're working so hard to grow.

At Studio B Salon, two of the repair systems we love are OLAPLEX and K18. OLAPLEX is a great option for hair that has experienced damage from color, highlights, bleach, chemical services, heat, or everyday styling. Think of your OLAPLEX routine as: REPAIR → CLEANSE → CONDITION → PROTECT

OLAPLEX No.3 Complete Repair Treatment: This is your repair treatment and should be used before shampooing. When? 1–3 times per week, depending on your hair's condition. How? Apply to wet hair before shampooing, leave on for the time directed on the product, then rinse and continue with your shampoo and conditioner routine. The goal is to strengthen compromised hair and help reduce the type of breakage that can make hair appear thinner or prevent you from retaining length.

OLAPLEX No.4 Shampoo + No.5 Conditioner: These are your everyday maintenance steps. Use No.4 when you shampoo and follow with No.5 Conditioner. Concentrate conditioner on your mid-lengths and ends, where hair tends to be older, drier, and more fragile. Think of this combination as maintaining the progress you're making with your repair treatments.

Don't Forget OLAPLEX No.9: This is one of our favorites for clients who are concerned about breakage from styling and heat. OLAPLEX No.9 Bond Protector Nourishing Hair Serum is a lightweight leave-in serum that provides heat protection up to 450°F, while also helping reduce tangles and static. When should you use it?Every time you style your hair. Apply a small amount to clean, damp hair, starting at the ends and working upward. Then blow-dry, air-dry, or diffuse as usual. Why does this matter? If your hair is already fragile, protecting it from additional heat and mechanical stress is just as important as repairing the damage that's already there. Repair the hair → protect the hair → retain more length.

K18: Molecular Repair for Damaged Hair K18 takes a different approach to hair repair. Its Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask is designed to repair damage within the hair structure using K18PEPTIDE™. K18 recommends using the mask after shampooing, without conditioner beforehand, and allowing it to sit for four minutes before styling.

K18 Damage Shield Shampoo + Conditioner: Use these as your regular cleansing and conditioning routine. They help keep hair clean, conditioned, manageable, and protected between repair treatments.

The K18 4-Minute Repair Step: Here's where K18 gets really interesting, K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask. When? Use for 4–6 consecutive washes after a salon service, then use as needed for maintenance. How? Shampoo your hair. Skip conditioner. Towel-dry your hair until it's damp, not soaking wet. Apply 1–3 pumps, depending on your hair's length and density. Start at the ends and work toward the roots. Wait 4 full minutes. Don't rinse it out. Comb and style as usual. That four-minute wait is important, don't rush it!

Heat Protection Is NOT Optional: If you're concerned about breakage, this may be one of the easiest changes you can make to your routine.

K18 HeatBounce: Use HeatBounce every time you use heat. Apply it throughout sectioned hair before blow-drying. If you're going to use a curling iron or flat iron afterward, apply it again to dry hair before using your hot tool. K18 states that HeatBounce provides heat protection up to 450°F and reported 85% less breakage after blow-drying in its testing. Think of it as your "don't undo all the good work" step. You're repairing your hair with your treatment, now protect it from the next round of heat damage.

OLAPLEX or K18: Which Should You Choose? The truth is, there isn't one perfect product line for everyone.

Choose OLAPLEX if you're looking for: A complete repair and maintenance routine, bond-focused care, support for damaged/color-treated hair, a treatment you can incorporate into your regular shampoo routine and heat protection/styling support with No.9.

Choose K18 if you're looking for: Intensive molecular repair, a concentrated leave-in treatment, help restoring strength and elasticity to damaged hair, a simple 4-minute repair step and dedicated heat protection with HeatBounce. Depending on your hair's condition, your Studio B stylist may recommend a customized combination of products.

Hair Loss vs. Hair Breakage: This is one of the most important things to understand. Hair shedding happens when a hair releases from the follicle. Hair breakage happens when the hair strand snaps somewhere along its length. If you're finding lots of short pieces of hair, split ends, broken ends, or uneven lengths, breakage may be contributing to the appearance of thinning. Repair products like OLAPLEX and K18 are designed to address damage and breakage, not the underlying causes of medical hair loss or scalp-related shedding. If you're experiencing sudden, significant, or persistent hair shedding or thinning, it's important to speak with a dermatologist or other qualified medical professional. Product directions and claims referenced above are based on current manufacturer guidance. OLAPLEX and K18 products are intended to help address hair damage and breakage; they are not treatments for medical causes of hair loss.

Your Hair Doesn't Need More Products—It Needs the Right Products: If your hair has been feeling fragile, dry, damaged, or like it simply won't grow past a certain length, come see us at Studio B Salon. Our stylists can assess the condition of your hair and help you decide whether OLAPLEX, K18, or a customized combination makes the most sense for your hair, color, lifestyle, and styling routine.

Healthy hair starts in the salon, but maintaining it starts at home.
